Tuition-Free Teen Creative Writing Workshop

I'm excited to announce that I'll be teaching a creative nonfiction class for teens. See details below. Both workshops are great for young people who want an outlet to express themselves. And it's tuition-free! Apply today.

Fiction & Creative Nonfiction Classes
July 12 - July 23, 2010
Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex
8001 Sheriff Road, Landover, MD 20785

GRADES 8 - 12

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
Classes meet Monday - Thursday from 6:00PM to 9:00PM
Followed by continued instruction throughout the academic school year

The Hurston/Wright Creative Writing Workshop for Teens provides new opportunities for students who are interested in creative writing to develop their writing and reading skills in a nurturing group setting that celebrates Black literature. Most importantly, this tuition-free creative writing workshop will enable students to become effective communicators, a skill which will benefit them throughout their educational, and occupational careers.

ADMISSION

Admission is competitive based on the quality of writing samples submitted. In order to provide the highest quality of instruction possible, classes are kept small. Therefore we may not be able to accommodate ALL qualified applicants.

HOW TO APPLY

    * Complete application (note there is a $10 application fee)
    * Email writing sample and letter of recommendation to info@hurstonwright.org
    * Applications, writing sample and letter of recommendation must be received by June 22, 2010. Applications received after June 22nd will be considered only if space is available.
    * Letters of acceptance will be e-mailed by June 29th.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Fiction: This workshop will introduce students to the basic elements of creative writing and demonstrate how this genre of writing can enhance every facet of their communication skills and full self-expression.

Creative Nonfiction: This workshop will introduce students to the basic elements of crafting stories from real life experiences. Students will learn how to uncover facts, details and opinions and shape them into an artistic truth told in a compelling memorable narrative voice.

Both workshops provide teens a safe space to voice their thoughts about love, life, school, friends, and important moments from a perspective of the next generation of authors.
