Using Music & Lyrics to Enlighten

It's the beginning of the spring season in March on the City College campus, as students prepare for the final week of school before spring break. Adam Freas -- or Freas as he's known by most -- leans back in his office chair while Phonte from the rap group Little Brother is heard faintly in the background.

Another Great Review for THE MESSAGE

Felicia Pride definitely wins the "I wish I thought of that" award for The Message. Some are calling it the Chicken Noodle Soup for the Soul of Hip Hop, and as corny and inappropriate as that sounds, it's true.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to THE MESSAGE!!!

That's right! THE MESSAGE turns two this month. I still remember the first day I held it in my hands. I wanted to cry, but couldn't. I had to hurry to the Baltimore Book Festival.

Brooklyn Bodega Peeps THE MESSAGE

I you all do not know about the book The Message: 100 Life Lessons from Hip-Hop's Greatest Songs, you need to. Felicia Pride examines her favorite hip-hop songs while incorporating her own personal reflections on life. She found that many hip- hop lyrics spoke directly to what was going on in her life, an aided her journey. Thus she dedicated this whole book to the songs that have helped her learn and live.

Another Great Review for The Message

The Message: 100 Life Lessons From Hip-Hop's Greatest Songs by Felicia Pride is a written testimony to how much music influences us. Each chapter has the title of a song that had an impact on Ms. Pride.

New Interview with Me on ThisisRealMusic.com

Shout-out to the folk over at ThisisRealMusic.com. They interviewed me last year at the Black Lily Film Festival in Philadelphia. You can check out the interview here. It's very, very hard for me to watch myself. So far I've seen a few moments of it to declare that I'm looking a little crazy. But hopefully, you'll enjoy it!

The Message Hits Oregon

The Multnomah Public Library in Oregon recently reviewed THE MESSAGE as part of its collection.

Atlantic City: More than Casinos - BackList in the Community

By Fellina Pride For as long as I can remember, whenever I would hear people mention Atlantic City I would automatically think of the boardwalk, the casinos and the hotels. That changed on November 21st when Felicia and I traveled to the city to conduct a presentation at Viking Academy High School and at the Atlantic City Free Public Library for THE MESSAGE.

Felicia and Phonte

"With "The Message," Felicia Pride has perfectly illustrated the motivational nature of rap music, and how it relates to the hip-hop generation. For those who would argue that hip-hop music is a destructive force, "The Message" shows evidence to the contrary and proves there is positivity in rap music for those who want to embrace it."--Phonte of Little Brother

Check Me Out at Clutch

Shout-out to Deanna Sutton for featuring me on the super e-magazine Clutch.

Me, A NY Pier, The Message, Great Music, and Lots of Book Lovers

I've blogged about this event before, but one of my favorite literary gatherings is Hot Book Fun in the Summertime. The first annual one, which was held a few years back, was a ball! I brought my mother with me and she and I danced like we weren't going to dance again.

A Case for Re(definition)

Hiphopper Adam Mansbach penned a thought-provoking piece regarding how the term "hip-hop" is thrown around to describe everything from wack music to Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Yeah, I know. For that reason, there's a need to reclaim what hip-hop means.

Phelps, Hip-Hop & The Message

I tried to tell folks that people use hip-hop in their everyday life as motivation. I even wrote a book about it. So I wasn't surprised to hear that super athlete and Baltimore resident (shout-out to Charm City), Michael Phelps' motivational soundtrack is chock-full of hip-hop.

An Author's Hustle: When Is it Time to Move On?

I've never been an expert at knowing when it's time to move on. A quick review of past romances shows that I have remained on relationship trains to nowhere for far longer than I should. Now, I'm at a crossroads in another relationship--the one with my first book, The Message: 100 Life Lessons From Hip-Hop's Greatest Songs...

Vote for THE MESSAGE for The Pink List!

I was just notified that my book has been nominated for an award. Yay! But voting ends midnight tonight. Can you help a sister win? Thanks! Felicia Pride, author of The Message: 100 Life Lessons from Hip-Hop's Greatest Songs has been nominated for WEEN's Pink List (see more about the list after the cut)...

I'm Not the Only One

To celebrate Hiphop Appreciation Week which took place last week, I asked bloggers, writers, hip-hop heads, former hip-hop heads to tell me their song. That one song (although most had more than one) that does it for them, holds meaning, or continues to spark important memories. And when you asked a dope cast of folks, the responses are naturally just as dope. Allow me to share...

What Hip-Hop Song Empowered You? Win An Autographed Copy of The Message

In celebration of Hiphop Appreciation Week which takes place May 18-25, I want to hear from you. This year's theme is empowerment and while hip-hop music is constantly being attacked for violent, sexist, and materialistic lyrics, what about all those songs that empower, motivate, and teach? What about those songs that articulate how you feel, those songs that you grew up on and those that made you fall for hip-hop?

Check Me Out in the April/May issue of GIANT Magazine!

Check me out in the April/May issue of GIANT magazine. I'm talking about hip-hop and THE MESSAGE.

DC Launch Party for THE MESSAGE...Finally

If you've ever did the wop, wrote down lyrics to your favorite hip-hop song, or had Word Up! posters plastered on your wall, come celebrate the release of Felicia Pride's first book, THE MESSAGE: 100 LIFE LESSONS FROM HIP-HOP'S GREATEST SONGS. Music speaks to us. In author Felicia Pride's case, the unique storytelling of hip-hop music has ushered in life lessons and articulated many of her personal experiences...

2008 Hip-Hop Appreciation Week

This year's theme for the 11th annual Hiphop Appreciation Week, which takes place May 18-25, is empowerment. Founded by the Temple of Hiphop, the nationwide celebration allows the hip-hop community to make a deliberate effort to engage in the principles of peace, love, unity, and safe fun. See the note from Minister Server after the cut and for those who haven't had a chance to pick up my book THE MESSAGE: 100 LIFE LESSONS FROM HIP-HOP'S GREATEST SONGS, it's a perfect companion for this year's HipHop Appreciation Week...

An Author's Hustle: Convincing and Cosigning

So according to Allhiphop.com, Bill Cosby is working on a hip-hop album called STATE OF EMERGENCY that will address the issues that he's been attacking in public lately including "proper parenting, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, Black-on-Black crime and the dropout rate in America's high schools."

An Author's Hustle: NPR, Amazon, Prospects

I was on NPR's Talk of the Nation today, which in my book promotion journey is quite a big deal for me. And the interview went great. Save for the babble that clumsily fell out of my mouth in the first few minutes. After the nerves passed, I became more comfortable and hopefully represented for hip-hop.

An Author's Hustle: Who Let the Beast Out?

There have been times when I think the New Year is a way that we fake ourselves out to think that we have a new beginning, when really it's just another day. But this year, I needed to believe.

An Author's Hustle: Sleep? Who Needs It?

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love my sleep. I'm a daytime napper and one who happily submits to tiredness whenever the mood hits. But this affinity for sleep doesn't align well with the book promotion grind. This was a big week for THE MESSAGE. Thus, a sister is craving sleep like a pregnant woman for pickles. Right now, I'm running off of excitement, continued anxiety, and a need to keep the momentum machine turning.

An Author's Hustle: I Purchased My Book

I purchased my own book today. I was a little nervous that the book wouldn't be available in the local Barnes & Noble that I went into. Did the chain buy copies of it? I thought about searching various sections (Self-help, African-American, music) for it, but in order to cut through my own angst, I went straight to customer service.

An Author's Hustle: The Series

AAH (like the acronym?) will be the place where I'll chronicle the ups and downs of being a debut author--you know the nervousness, anxiety, the booksignings where no one shows up, the pressure to get celebrity co-signs and other "major publicity," dealing with your publisher, dealing with haters, etc.
