On the BackList - Week of 11.9.08
11/03/08
On the BackList, Publishing/Literary
Since BackList is a publishing term which loosely means "those books which remain in print" we want to start our own BackList so to speak.
Weekly, we will highlight a great book. It won't always be new. It won't always be expected. But it will be worthy of attention.
Now we've tried this before, but many things interrupted us from doing it right. So now we're back at it, giving you a weekly book that we believe should not only be at the top of your reading list, but should remain in print for years to come.
We don't want this to be a one-way thing though. Comment on your choices. Recommend your own. Let's continue to do what we love to do over here: talk about books.
Ready for the first title?
Here it is:
Title: NAT TURNER
Author: Kyle Baker
Why We Chose it: Using illustration and storytelling, Baker has seamed together an incredibly unique way to bring Nat Turner to life through the graphic novel. Oh and Method Man recommended it to yours truly; bruh wanted his kids to read it.
Synopsis: The story of Nat Turner and his slave rebellion--which began on August 21, 1831, in Southampton County, Virginia--is known among school children and adults. To some he is a hero, a symbol of Black resistance and a precursor to the civil rights movement; to others he is monster--a murderer whose name is never uttered.
In Nat Turner, acclaimed author and illustrator Kyle Baker depicts the evils of slavery in this moving and historically accurate story of Nat Turner's slave rebellion. Told nearly wordlessly, every image resonates with the reader as the brutal story unfolds.
This graphic novel collects all four issues of Kyle Baker's critically acclaimed miniseries together for the first time in hardcover and paperback. The book also includes a new afterword by Baker.
COP IT!
