YA for Black Teens
Publishing/Literary
Author Denene Millner takes on the dearth of titles for black teens in this week's Publishers Weekly. She and coauthor Mitzi Miller released HOTLANTA, the first book in their young adult series that's published by Scholastic.
While I agree with her that there is definitely a lack of books for young African Americans, I do think that the segment is growing tremendously.
You've got Kimani Tru doing things. ReShonda Tate Billingsley has a great inspirational series. Dafina, the imprint of Kensington, also has a few series targeted towards young adults.
I think a bigger part of the problem, and Millner mentioned it, is exposure. Now that more age and content appropriate books are being published for young people, we have to connect them with these titles.
BackList definitely has some ideas, which hopefully we'll be rolling out sooner than later. But in the meantime, check out HALLWAY DIARIES, the anthology that features my novella "How to Be Down." And I'm happy to say, I just turned in a manuscript to my publisher for my first YA novel.

Thanks! I wasn't familiar with the Boogie Down Clique novels. I will definitely check them out.
There's also The Boogie Down Clique Novels, a new teen series about teens coming of age in the Bronx, New York. My daughter read the first book, The Kids at Latimar High, and enjoyed it. A second book is due out in December, I believe. The series is published with Whirlabout Publishers, an independent publisher. Hopefully, The Boogie Down Clique Novels will gain more exposure. There is still a lack of exposure with our YA books.
