An Author's Hustle: Convincing and Cosigning

An Author's Hustle: Convincing and Cosigning

Author's Hustle, The Message

So according to Allhiphop.com, Bill Cosby is working on a hip-hop album called STATE OF EMERGENCY that will address the issues that he's been attacking in public lately including "proper parenting, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, Black-on-Black crime and the dropout rate in America's high schools."

I don't really know what to say about that one. I'll just leave it that.

But I can tell you that THE MESSAGE is picking up some steam after the USA Today piece and the NPR "Talk of the Nation" interview. That doesn't mean a sister can start coasting.

I'm realizing that this book promotion game is all about convincing and cosigning.

It begins by convincing an agent to take on your project. Then convincing a publisher to publish it. Then convincing bookstores to stock it.

Much of this convincing is done through cosigning. Thus a bookstore is convinced about the potential of your book because a major media outlet cosigned it. Or a major celebrity cosigned it.

And of course it's about convincing media and celebrities as well.

Then you're trying to convince folks to buy it. To say persuasive skills are golden is an understatement.

Enough of that.

I've got some great events coming up, including the one advertised on the flyer above. Check them out below.

Also, you can watch this video that Scheme Magazine taped of me at D.C.'s Busboys and Poets. (Who I was unable to convince of THE MESSAGE'S value, thus the bookstore doesn't stock it.) I haven't watched the video. I find it hard to watch myself.
